There are two kinds of smoke shop. One is a room with product in it. The other is a shop — somebody behind the counter who knows what they're selling, stock that's actually there when you turn up, and prices that don't quietly change depending on whether you look like a tourist.

We're trying to be the second one. That's the entire pitch, and it's harder than it sounds, because it means restocking things that sell instead of things with a good margin, keeping cigars in conditions that don't ruin them, and hiring people who'll say "that one's not great, try this instead" even when the not-great one costs more.

Fort Walton Beach is a specific place to run this kind of shop. We're minutes from Eglin Air Force Base and not far from Hurlburt Field, which means a big share of the people through our door are airmen — often on rotation, often new to the area, often trying to find a reliable shop before they've figured out anything else about the town.

So we made a decision early: show us a valid military ID and you get a discount, no ceremony, no asking twice. It isn't a marketing gimmick. It's the smallest possible thank-you to the people who make up a large part of our neighbourhood.

The rest is straightforward. Six counters — vapes and e-liquid, glass, hookah, cigars, kratom and herbals, accessories. New stock lands weekly. Everything is bought in person, because the entire point of a shop is that you can hold the piece, ask the question, and change your mind before you pay.
